For those wondering, well, I guess we made it. There were some tough parts but overall not too bad.

Since about two years now, after the recommendation of a friend, I have taken up cycling.
Below is a route I take often so If you see a very old bike with some sort of brake disk in the front wheel, it might very well be me. (The brake disk is actually a sensor for my eighties era cycle computer, the iku cyclotronic)

Today was the last day of the last subject of the top master courses.

In this last week we studied the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
This video is made using a confocal microscope and follows the division
of two mutant yeast cells during a couple of hours.

The peroxysomes of the cells contain GFP. And no, this is not wildtype.

Ik heb laatst een algemeen aanvullend vak gevolgd bij Filosofie. “De technologische cultuur” Over wetenschap, maatschappij en de samenhang daar tussen. Misschien vraag je je af waar zoiets over gaat. En laat dat nu net een vraag van het huiswerktentamen zijn. Dus dit moest ik toch al intypen:

In de eerste colleges wordt het zogenaamde moderne/verlichte “standaardbeeld” van de wetenschap geschetst. Dat komt neer op het idee dat de wetenschap stukje bij beetje de natuur ontcijfert. Natuurlijk worden er daarin weleens fouten gemaakt. Maar door toetsing van andere wetenschappers worden die dan rechtgezet en zo komen we steeds verder.
In de 60-70 er jaren stonden er filosofen/sociologen op die het daar niet mee eens waren. Zij beargumenteerden dat alle wetenschappelijke kennis niet uit de natuur komt, maar door de wetenschappers is geconstrueerd. Nu zul je denken (dat dacht ik) dat die hippies er wraak voor willen nemen dat ze op de middelbare school de exacte vakken niet snapten. Jammer genoeg is dat niet helemaal waar. Ze zijn juist tot die theorie gekomen na het bestuderen van wetenschappers in hun natuurlijke habitat (het lab, congressen etc.). Dan blijkt dat er nogal een verschil zit tussen wat wetenschappers zeggen en denken dat ze doen en dat wat ze écht doen.
